At that very moment i knew it was going to be one of the best months of my life.Īfter we had made ourselves at home we said goodbye to Greta and shortly after we got in the car with some other volunteers and we went to Tehuamixtle, a town near by, to go snorkelling, as it was sunday. She helped us settle in at our Host Justina's House and then returned the next morning to take us to our project a couple of hours away.Īs soon as we got out of the car at the turtle camp in Mayto i was stunned. Her knowledge about the place is amazing and she always knew where were the best places to go. On the first day she showed us around the beautiful city and helped us to buy whatever we needed. As soon as i walked through the doors at arrivals until i walked back through departures when the month had come to an end, Greta, the Outreach international Coordinator in Mexico was always there to help us with anything we needed. Yanacocha's purpose is the reinsertion of the animal into the wild, so close contact with the animals is not recommended.Īfter months of planning, excitement and nerves i finally landed in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to Spend a month on a Sea turtle conservation project. Being part of the center gives great opportunities to interact with the animals but it doesn't mean that we can pet and hug them. THIS IS NOT A ZOO ! Everything is done for the animals' benefit (not so much for the visitors' benefit). We eat lunch and dinner all together (volunteers and coordinators), some of us cooking and cleaning dishes. The afternoon, there are different activities to be done, still related to the animal welfare. No concern, no stress, it is very relaxing: we take care of those gorgeous animals (= preparation of the food, distribution, cleaning of the enclosure), we spend time with them (no petting !! most of those animals are wild, so except for the food morning round, we stay outside), we make sure they are healthy and happy. In the morning, we read our program for the day, quite easy and straightforward (sometimes, a bit physical too) and the rest of the day goes smoothly. Leave your "always connected you" at home, and appreciate the restful environment. In Yanacocha, forget your routine, your job, your problems. Overall I would highly recommend the project or volunteering in general! It was an incredible month & was amazing to be involved in such a good cause. Having other volunteers I'm with the same host family was also good as it caused many interesing conversations & so a group of us could explore Ecuador together. This allowed me to be immersed in the culture & was really insightful & fun. A highlight of the experience of volunteering was also staying with a host family. I had limited to no Spanish before lessons on arrival but managed to communicate with the children & their level pf Spanish. As someone currently studying OT I assisted the children in these activities & sometimes conducted the intervention sessions independently. Within the OT practice the OT often saw multiple children at a time & enaged them in multiple typical OT activities. sensory integration, hand-eye coordination activities, facilitating normal movement development, encouraging language development & communication. I was involved in assisting with the children's needs & in activities to further their development e.g. Within the project I worked in the kindergarden (12 children with special needs aged 2 to 5) & in the OT rooms linked to the project.

Just ten days after meeting Evan, Liew convinced his partners, and Lightspeed invested $485,000 in Snapchat, valuing the young company at $4.25 million. “Snapchat had jumped from one thousand daily active users in late 2011 to one hundred thousand daily active users in April 2012. Disappearing photos? It sounded like a sexting app at best, or a fad at worst.“ “But the first venture capitalist who met with Evan, including blue chip firms like Sequoia Capital and Benchmark Partners, passed on the investment. You were just exchanging lightweight photos that were meant to be discarded immediately.“Īll the VC passed initially. It wasn’t just that taking and sharing a photo was essentially free sending a photo to a friend no longer had the importance it once did with testing. The cost of creating and sharing a photo dropped so much knowing that the photo would disappear. We talked through photos instead of posting them to garner likes. “Because you could only reply with a photo, friends would send selfies of themselves reacting to photos. Snapchat removed the pressure of the perfect photo. Snapchat had no lies, no permanence, no social anxiety.” Snapchat was not meant to be a social network - it was designed as a small, private network, to share with your closest friends. Even designed Snapchat as an antidote to this obsession with likes and retweets. “Teenagers also felt pressure to post the most glamourous representations of their lives on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media sites to rack up likes. They needed to get it into more people’s hands and make it grow, even if they had to force this growth at first.” Evan and Bobby knew Snapchat had value, because everyone who used the app used it all the time. “Although it had less than a hundred users, most of whom were Evan and Bobby’s friends, the people who did use the app were using it all day, every day. To make Picaboo stand out, he put the Ghostface Chillah logo on a bright yellow background.”Ĭater to the power users. “Evan studied the hundred most popular apps in the app store and noticed that none had yellow logos. “There was a shift at some point, from smart kids saying, “I want to solve X problem” to students going, “I want to start a startup. Stanford kids wanted to start any startup. This long runway, combined with their insistence on perfection, became toxic as they spun their wheels, creating many products that never saw the light of day.” “Clinkle never came close to feeling this sort of pressure. Too much cash killed Clinkle it made them lazy. And so, there was no one with sole responsibility, let alone a board seat, when things started to go to hell for Clinkle.” But none of the sixty-odd investors had a significant amount of money on the line. “Had any venture capital firm or person invested $30 million on their own, they would have gone through a rigorous due diligence process, vetting Clinkle’s team and technology inside and out. Staying in the game round after round, as the world changes and targets are met or not met, is extraordinarily difficult.” Raising some money for an idea is not that difficult. “But the descent from seed-funded startups to Series A and B is often much steeper than people expect. “He wouldn’t have to worry about sending a hookup a picture of his junk! And girls would be way more likely to send him racy photos if they disappeared.” Snapchat really started as a sexting app. The post received more than 2,800 reactions and 634 shares in three days (shown below, right). They are looking forward to the day when the entire team can be together serving again. New protocols include less team members working at any one time, wearing masks, using hand sanitizer, maintaining distances, etc. The team leaders put much thought and efforts perfecting a procedure that allows them to continue ministry. Undertaking any type of construction during this time is a challenge. Lake Oconee PCA team members maintaining social distancing while holding the line.īuilding Sheds of Hope kits is construction, light construction, but construction just the same. They have been cautiously holding the line, complying with social distancing mandate, but staying busy staying on mission. Take a look at the following pictures of a recent Shed of Hope build by Lake Oconee Presbyterian Church. Our network of relief providers have been innovative in finding ways to cautiously take steps during this time that will allow our teams to rapidly restart operations when it is safe. Meanwhile, our team of staff and volunteers have been investing massive amounts of time and effort preparing for that day, so that when it comes we may do so safely. One day MNA Disaster Response, including Sheds of Hope, will be cleared to again mobilize volunteers. We do continue to register volunteers who are chomping at the bit, as they say, to re-engage at worksites. Our stance for now continues to be, “HOLD… HOLD… HOLD!” Above all, we don’t have the capacity to thwart God’s providence in the current events unfolding around us. Robust mobilization of volunteers during the ‘safer-in-place’ mandate is not allowed and likely will not be allowed for some time to come. Using this scene as an analogy for our volunteer mobilization efforts, the approaching cavalry is the fear of missed opportunity to serve. If that doesn't fix anything, find your related issue below. Check your HDMI connections, and if possible, unplug and plug them in again. These properties were difficult for a widow to manage alone, causing remarriage to a neighbor to come quickly (Jester, 2008).Of course, the first step to any technology-related problem is to check if all components are properly plugged in. The property held in the widows’ name was typically large pieces of land, slaves, and young children. When a woman remarried the land and possessions that she inherited from her deceased husband became the property of her new husband immediately (Jester, 2008). It was typical for women to be married three or four times. It was not unheard of for men to be married two or three times, this was mostly due to the hardship women faced in frequent child birth (Holliday, 1960). This happened because women were in such short supply in the colonies, and they were necessary to survival and comfort (Sage, 2007). Suitors would begin pursuing her as early as the day of the funeral (Jester, 2008). It was common for the grief of a widow to be very short lived. Widowed women were typically remarried within a year if not sooner (Portland, 2001). However, as the death rate in the colonies was very high, remarriages were typical and frequent of both men and women (Jester, 2008). As a married couple life was much easier and pleasant.ĭivorce was typically unheard of and very rarely sought (Sage, 2007). The man did the hard outdoor labor such as hunting and building while the woman did the house work such as preparing food, sewing, and cleaning (Twin Cities, 2004). The man and woman worked together as husband and wife to survive. There was economic pressure to marry as well because it was easier to survive as a family than as a single person. If a woman was not married by the age of twenty-five she was socially humiliated (Portland, 2001). Girls as young as the age of thirteen or fourteen were often married. Men and women both felt pressure to marry at young ages. Pressure to marry came from the colony both socially and economically. Colonial women typically married for social and economic reasons (Portland, 2001). However, their role was still of a domestic nature. The wife did have some influence on her husband (Jester, 2008). However, in letters between husband and wife there is evidence that the wife was highly respected, and her advice was often asked for. Marriage did not seem very enjoyable for women due to the lack of freedom. The woman was not allowed to hold land in her name, any property that she owned at the time of marriage became property of the husband (Jester, 2008). A married woman in the American colonies had no control over possessions during her husbands’ life. Husband and wife were considered “one person at law” that was to be controlled by the husband (Warber, n.d.). When women married they lost most of their freedom. One of the main roles of a wife was that of home executive which included managing servants, clothing the family, feeding the family, care for family sickness, supervise spinning, weaving, garment making and general maintenance of the home (Jester, 2008). Throughout the years of colonization the wifely duties became burdensome and numerous however they happily assumed the tasks required of a wife. Men and women both had their responsibilities that worked together to keep the family and colonies alive. It was believed in the colonies that “it is not known which be the most necessary, man or woman ” (Jester, 2008). The colonies did not have a problem with arranged marriages, since the family unit was so vital to their survival. The women who traveled to the American colonies to become wives were promised to have their passage paid if they married a male colonist (Jester, 2008). Letters were sent to England asking for one hundred “maids young and uncorrupt” to be sent to the American colonies to become wives (Jester, 2008). Wives were needed to stabilize the colony and home life. It was soon realized that the men greatly outnumbered the women. The first English women that traveled to colonial America came to be aids and wives to the men (Searle, 2007). This role was extremely important and was the glue that held the family together. During colonial times women also had the role of wife and mother. |
